DROPS Autumn Wink Skirt

This DROPS design has a grown up, put together feel thanks to its structured texture and a neat button placket at one side. It is worked top down, first back and forth to shape the split, then in the round, turning each round to keep that woven look consistent all the way down.

The sample is made in DROPS Lima, a wool and alpaca blend that gives the skirt a soft, cozy drape, on a 3.5 mm hook. It comes in a full size range from XS to XXXL and finishes with three buttons along the split.

What You'll Need

A soft group B yarn, a hook, and three buttons.

  • Yarn DROPS Lima, a wool and alpaca blend (yarn group B). About 400 to 650 g depending on size. Any group B yarn works as a substitute if you prefer cotton for summer.
  • Hook 3.5 mm (US E/4). Check the gauge so the textured pattern comes out at the right size.
  • Buttons Three buttons. The pattern uses DROPS buttons no. 818, but any three that complement your yarn will do.
  • Extras Yarn needle and stitch markers. For the button band, seaming, and keeping track of the right and wrong side rounds.

Tips Before You Start

A few things worth knowing that the pattern page does not always spell out.

Work the split before joining

The skirt starts flat to create the button placket, then joins in the round. Read through that transition once before you start so the switch from rows to rounds feels clear.

Mark your right side

The texture depends on alternating right and wrong side rounds. A marker on the right side keeps you from losing track and breaking the pattern.

Swatch if you swap the yarn

Lima is warm and lofty. If you substitute a cotton for summer, make a quick gauge swatch first, since a different fiber can change both the size and the drape.

Sew buttons to match the placket

Space your three buttons evenly along the band and check the placement against the buttonholes before sewing, so the waist closes smoothly and sits flat.
