Fast and Easy A-Line Summer Skirt

Agnes from AC Crochets calls this her fast and easy summer skirt, and it lives up to the name. You start with a stretchy ribbed waistband, then work down in double crochet with a few gentle increases that give the skirt its soft A line swing, and finish with a pretty shell edge at the hem.

She made hers short and flirty, but the shape makes it easy to add rows for more length. It uses a soft bamboo blend on a 3 mm hook, and a drawstring at the waist lets you fine tune the fit.

What You'll Need

A soft, drapey yarn and a small hook for a crisp A line.

  • Yarn A soft DK or sport weight yarn. The designer used Soft Bamboo Double from Go Handmade, about three and a half balls for the smallest size. Add more for longer lengths or larger sizes.
  • Hook 3 mm. The yarn label suggests 3 to 4 mm, and the smaller hook keeps the fabric neat and the A line crisp.
  • Measurements Your waist measurement. The ribbed band stretches, so the pattern has you make it slightly shorter than your waist for a snug fit.
  • Drawstring A crocheted cord. Threaded through the waist to adjust and tie.
  • Extras Yarn needle and stitch markers. Markers help you keep track of where your increases fall.

Tips Before You Start

A few things worth knowing that the pattern page does not always spell out.

1

Put your increases on the sides

The designer suggests spacing the increases so the seam sits at your side rather than the back. It gives a cleaner line and keeps the shaping from bunching in one spot.

2

Keep the waistband loose enough to slip on

Since you work the band first, check that it stretches over your waist comfortably before building the skirt. It is a two minute check that saves a lot of frogging.

3

Add length in whole repeats

Want it longer than the sample? Add rows before the shell edge, and add them evenly so the A line stays balanced all the way around.

4

Step into it, do not pull it over your hips

To protect the stretch of the waistband, put the skirt on from the top down rather than tugging it up over your hips.
