Boho Baby Sundress with Daisy Squares

Three daisy granny squares sit right across the front, then the bodice flows into a double crochet skirt worked in soft color stripes. The scalloped shell edging at the hem is the finishing touch that makes it feel special rather than plain.

What You'll Need

The supply list is short, and you only need one skein of each color.

  • Yarn Bernat Softee Baby Cotton or Bernat Softee Cotton, a weight 3 cotton blend, in three colors. One skein of each is plenty. The designer suggests Golden, Petal, and Cotton, or Sandstone, Aqua Mist, and Cotton.
  • Hook 4.0 mm (G). This pairs with the weight 3 cotton to give a soft fabric that still holds its shape through the bodice and skirt.
  • Buttons Two 1 inch round buttons. These fasten the shoulder straps, and the straps are worked with buttonholes so you can adjust the fit a little as baby grows.
  • Tapestry needle For seaming and weaving in ends. You will use it to join the granny squares into the bodice ring and to sew on the straps and buttons.
  • Scissors A small sharp pair. Handy for clean cuts at every color change in the striped skirt.

Check your gauge before the skirt

This is a fitted little garment, so gauge matters more than it does on a toy. The pattern lists 4 inches as 18 double crochet stitches and 10 rows. Work a quick swatch from the skirt section and adjust your hook if you are running loose or tight, since a small difference adds up across a baby dress.

Keep your granny squares consistent

The seven daisy squares get joined into a circle for the bodice, so they need to be the same size and tension to lie flat. Make all of them in one sitting if you can, and give them a light block before seaming so the bodice sits smooth against the chest.

Sizing up is built in

The main pattern is written for 6 to 12 months, but there are notes at the end for a larger size 8. You can also lengthen the skirt simply by adding more double crochet rows before the scalloped border, which is an easy way to get another season of wear.

Weave in ends as you change colors

The striped skirt means several color joins, and it is much easier to secure and trim each tail as you go than to face a pile of ends at the end. Cotton yarn can work loose over time, so weave each end in well so the dress holds up to baby wear and washing.

Secure the buttons well

Buttons are the one part to double check on any baby make. Sew them on tightly and give them a firm tug to test, or swap in sewn snaps behind a decorative button if you would rather not have a removable piece near a little one.
