Cream crochet skirt with a wide floral granny square lace border and scalloped hem, worn with a white tank top
Free Pattern by DROPS Design

DROPS Beach Dream Skirt

This DROPS design starts with a row of pretty granny squares that form the floral lace border, then you work up from there in a mix of treble and double crochet. The best part is that the standout detail, that daisy like openwork band, is the very first thing you make, so momentum is on your side.

It is worked in DROPS Muskat, a matte cotton, on a 4 mm hook, and comes in sizes S to XXXL. The waistband is finished with three little buttons and a strand of elastic, so it stays put without feeling tight.

What You'll Need

Cotton, a few buttons, and a strand of elastic for the waist.

  • Yarn DROPS Muskat, a worsted weight 100 percent cotton. About 400 to 650 g depending on your size. Any yarn group B cotton will work as a substitute.
  • Hook 4 mm. Check your gauge against the pattern square so the border and body line up.
  • Buttons Three buttons. The pattern uses DROPS buttons no. 802, but any three that suit the skirt will do.
  • Waistband A strand of elastic. Threaded through the waistband to keep the fit snug and comfortable.
  • Extras Yarn needle and stitch markers. For seaming the squares and keeping your place in the pattern rounds.

Tips Before You Start

A few things worth knowing that the pattern page does not always spell out.

1

Make all your squares first

The border is a strip of granny squares sewn into a ring. Crochet them all before you join so you can lay them out, check they are the same size, and block them flat for a neat seam.

2

Keep the squares right side up

When you sew the squares together, make sure they all face the same way. It is an easy thing to miss and it keeps the floral pattern consistent all the way around.

3

Mind the right and wrong side rounds

The textured body alternates rounds worked from the right and wrong side. Pop a marker on the right side so you always know which way you are working.

4

Try it before adding elastic

Slip the skirt on once the waistband is done and before you thread the elastic. That way you can set the elastic to your own waist for a fit that stays up all day.
