Kawaii Amigurumi Mushroom

This free pattern from Anitha Domacin at A Little Love Everyday is about as sweet as amigurumi gets. The bright red cap with its little white spots sits on a chubby cream body, and the tiny embroidered smile gives it that classic kawaii face you'll want to make over and over. The whole thing is worked from the top down, so the cap and body flow right into each other.

It uses sport weight cotton and a 2mm hook, which keeps the stitches tight and the fabric crisp, and the finished mushroom comes out small enough to sit in your palm. It's a quick make, so most crocheters can finish one in an evening.

What You'll Need

The supply list is short and beginner friendly.

  • Yarn Sport weight cotton in red and white. Cotton holds the stitch definition that gives the mushroom its crisp, tidy look. You only need a small amount of each color.
  • Hook 2mm. Smaller than a sport weight label usually suggests, which is on purpose. The tight gauge keeps the stuffing from peeking through the stitches.
  • Stuffing Polyester fiberfill. You'll only need a little since the mushroom is palm sized. Stuff as you go for the smoothest shape.
  • Eyes 6mm flatback or safety eyes. Safety eyes lock in from behind, while flatbacks glue on at the end. Either gives you that wide kawaii gaze.
  • Extras Tapestry needle, black embroidery thread, and all-purpose glue. The thread embroiders the little smile, and the glue secures flatback eyes and the white cap spots.

Tips Before You Start

A few things worth knowing that the pattern page does not always spell out.

1

Keep your tension tight

Sport weight cotton on a 2mm hook is meant to feel snug. If you tend to crochet loosely, the stuffing will show through the gaps. Go down a hook size before you go up, and your fabric will stay dense and smooth.

2

Stuff the cap firmly to hold the dome

The red cap gets its rounded toadstool shape from the stuffing inside it, so pack it firmly enough that the dome stays plump. The body can be a touch softer. Add small bits at a time so the shaping stays even.

3

Place the eyes before you close it up

If you're using safety eyes, push them in and secure the backs while there's still an opening to reach inside. Once the body is stuffed and closed, you can't add them. The pattern tells you which round to place them on.

4

Arrange the spots before gluing

The white spots are made separately, so lay them on the cap and move them around before you commit. A little asymmetry actually looks more charming than a perfectly even layout. Once you love the placement, glue or stitch them down.

5

Save the smile for last

Embroider the little mouth with the black thread after the eyes are set, so you can center it just right underneath them. A small, shallow curve reads as the friendliest face. Stitch it lightly and check the look before you pull it tight.
