Beach Striped Fitted Skirt

Molly and Ki from Kiks and Jack Crochet built this fitted mini around clean horizontal stripes, and it is such a satisfying make. The whole skirt is worked bottom up in the round, then topped with a ribbed waistband that sits just below your natural waist and hugs you in all the right places.

It uses worsted weight cotton and a 5.5 mm hook, and the pattern is written made to measure from XS to 5X, so you crochet it to your own waist, hip, and length. You simply alternate two colors row by row to build the stripes, which keeps the whole project relaxing and beginner friendly.

What You'll Need

A short, beginner friendly supply list, plus your own measurements.

  • Yarn Worsted weight cotton in two colors. The designer used Capri Cotton by Loops and Threads, roughly 2 skeins for the smallest size, split about 70 percent main color and 30 percent accent.
  • Hook 5.5 mm (US I/9). A slightly larger hook keeps the fabric soft and drapey rather than stiff.
  • Measurements Your waist, hip, and length. This is a made to measure pattern, so your own numbers set the size instead of a fixed chart.
  • Notions Stitch markers and blocking pins. Markers help you keep the stripes lined up, and a light block evens out the stitches at the end.
  • Extras Yarn needle and scissors. For weaving in the ends where the colors change.

Tips Before You Start

A few things worth knowing that the pattern page does not always spell out.

1

Carry your colors up the side

Instead of cutting the yarn every stripe, carry the unused color loosely up the inside edge. It saves you from weaving in dozens of ends and keeps the inside tidy.

2

Measure against yourself as you go

Because this is made to measure, try the skirt on once the waistband is joined and again partway up the body. It is much easier to adjust the length now than to redo rounds later.

3

Keep your stripe tension even

Some makers crochet tighter in one color than the other. Check that both colors feel the same on the hook so your stripes stay straight and the skirt does not pull in.

4

Block before you decide on length

Cotton relaxes and grows a little after a wash and block. Block the skirt before your final rounds so the finished length is exactly what you planned.
